FAQs

French writing tables from the 18th and 19th centuries typically feature refined proportions, delicate cabriole or tapered legs, and intricate veneer work such as marquetry or parquetry, designed for domestic correspondence.

These tables were constructed using a solid timber frame, often oak or pine, overlaid with fine cabinet woods like walnut, mahogany, or fruitwood veneers, frequently joined with traditional hand-cut dovetails.

Authenticity is identified by examining hand-cut joinery, timber shrinkage patterns, period-appropriate hardware, and the natural patina of the wood finish rather than uniform modern machining.

Position the piece as an accent table in a living room or study, allowing its natural timber tones and historic craftsmanship to contrast against neutral modern walls.

Maintain antique wooden surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying a traditional beeswax polish to nourish the timber.
