An Antique Staffordshire Figure Of Frederick Roberts, ‘lord Roberts’

An imposing figure of Lord Roberts on a horse facing left in a low plumed helmet. Raised capitals on the base. Largely cream and gilt. Potter was probably James Sadler.
 
Field Marshal Lord Roberts was born in India in 1832 and educated at Sandhurst. He served in the Indian Mutiny and won a VC in 1958. He accompanied Lord Napier on an expedition to Abyssinia. He conducted the famous march from Kabul to Kandahar, resulting in the pacification of Afghanistan in 1880. He was created a baronet in 1880; Commander in Chief in India from 1885-1893; Baron in 1892: Field Marshal in 1895. At the end of 1899 he was appointed to Supreme Commander in South Africa. He was created Earl in 1901, for saving the situation in South Africa. He died in France in 1914 when Colonel in Chief of the Indian Expeditionary Force.
