The table is constructed of top-quality solid mahogany timber and boasts a stunning grain configuration to the leaves. During this period, England was importing top quality timber from its colonies and other countries. The table is constructed with two elegant drop leaves either side. The leaves can be raised to widen the table. The original wooden hinged bearers / flaps underneath the tabletop support the drop leaves. The table also features a full-length drawer, which retains its original working lock, with a working key and retaining the original turned knobs. The drawer is oak lined, with hand-dovetail construction, runs smoothly and closes flush to the frame. The table stands on four sturdy tapered legs, terminating on its original brass cup and castors. This is a useful small multi-functional table, suitable as an occasional, lamp, or small dining or writing table around the home.

This style of table was possibly named after the Earl or Countess of Pembroke and the smaller versions were defined as a portable item. Interestingly, it was often used for bedside meals. It was characteristic of Georgian, Neoclassical and Federal styles, including those of Chippendale, Sheraton and Hepplewhite. It was known as one of the most useful but fashionable shapes for an antique table of its age.

Condition Report:

Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The table has been cleaned and French polished by hand to a professional standard, in our workshop, therefore the colour and patination is of an excellent standard. The top is free from any ink stains or watermarks. The leaf hinges are original and are in good working order, as well as the wooden flaps / bearers. The drawer retains its original working lock, with working key and the original turned knobs. The drawer is hand dovetailed, oak lined, runs smoothly and closes flush to the frame. The legs are also original, terminating on their original castors. This drop-leaf dining table is well constructed, solid in joint, sits firm on the ground and is ready to use.
