The angle of the table top is also adjustable and can be tilted to both sides and it has two raised galleries on either edge for holding books or music sheets.
The cast iron mechanism is stamped with the makers name "Carters Patent London".
It is in good condition for its age and has developed a lovely rich patina. It is strong and sturdy and all the parts move well. There are some minor signs of age and use, some surface marks and small knocks around the base but nothing detrimental and it displays beautifully.
