Here we have a wonderful Victorian Gillows Oak desk c1880. As you can see the desk or writing table has great colour and patina. There is a super tooled and gilded leather skiver to the top. There is an Oak border with a moulded edge. How do we know this is by Gillows? There are typical Gillows turned and reeded legs. The overall quality and craftmenship. The real tell tale feature is the construction of the base of the drawer attached to the back of the drawer. Gillows were the only cabinet maker to make slots in the base for screws. This way when the drawer base wood shrinks over time the drawer bases do not split. You will see on the photos that the drawers bases have indeed shrunk as the slots have moved towards the front of the drawer. A very clever way of doing things. The drawers are all solid Mahogany lined including base and have hand cut dovetail joints and original tuned wooden handles. The rear is finished and the whole sits on original ceramic casters. A super desk of lovely compact proportions in fantastic retail condition ready for your home. The dimensions are approx 120 cm wide 72 deep 76 cm high.
