Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

A Sutherland table is a type of narrow drop-leaf table designed to fold down into a very compact size when not in use. It was introduced during the Victorian era, gaining popularity in the mid-19th century and remaining a staple of Edwardian interior design.

These tables are traditionally constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak. Construction features include hinged drop leaves supported by swinging gate legs, often mounted on castor feet for mobility.

Authentication relies on examining hand-cut dovetails, timber grain consistency, patination, and the presence of period-appropriate brass or porcelain castors. Hand-turned wooden components and traditional joinery without modern metal screws also indicate age.

Positioned against a wall in its folded state, a Sutherland table serves as a slim display surface for lamps or ceramics, opening up easily when extra surface space is required for entertaining.

Maintain antique mahogany by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying natural beeswax periodically to nourish the wood. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking and fading.
