A fine William IV mahogany chamber writing table by GILLOWS OF LANCASTER.The nicely patinated green leather lined top with Greek key gilt tooling & with fitted lidded compartment opening to reveal twin ink wells with stamp and tilting pen or quilltray.The three frieze drawers with mahogany linings with typical & at the early stages regarded as unique to GILLOWS construction method of sliding notched screws to secure drawer bottom. This allowed the timber to both expand and contact thus eliminating splitting encountered when drawer bottoms were just nailed into the back rail with cut steel screws.( very clever) The finely reeded legs supported on large brass castors bearing the stamp of COPE & COLLINSON.
