Early C19th George IV mahogany writing or drawing table of Gillows design.

A small-scale rectangular mahogany table of free-standing form with unusual end drawers with turned handle pull knobs, and partially fitted with internal divisions . The top fitted with a carved three-quarter surround gallery with scroll details in the manner of similar documented tables by the esteemed cabinet-making firm of Gillows of Lancaster and London .

The front and reverse friezes with panelled reserves echoing the drawer fronts , below the moulded edge top . Raised on a stepped block base with carved scroll feet of classical inspiration , the ends of gently tapering square-section uprights united by a turned stretcher finished with external turned paterae .

The rectangular top supported on panelled and scrolled shaped brackets .

In good original, untouched ‘countryhouse’ condition. The figured mahogany top has gained a mellow faded patina with some marks and stains commensurate with age , use and purpose. Possibly originally fitted with castors , which could be re-instated if desired.

Probably conceived as a writing, painting or drawing table , offering both a flat work surface and the facility to leave the end drawers open for access to materials whilst seated at the table .
