The table smoothly extends from 5ft 2in to just under 10ft by means of a Joseph Fitter winding mechanism allowing it to seat up to 12 people. With beautiful colour and grain to the timbers it has been recently polished and waxed by hand using traditional materials and is ready for immediate use. Maples offered this table in various sizes and a choice of mahogany, oak or walnut with the catalogue describing it as “superior quality, careful manufacture, patented screw and strong wheels”.

Founded in 1841 by John Maple, Maple & Co were one of the largest and most successful antique furniture retailers and manufacturers in England during the latter half of the 19th Century and early 20th Century. The excellent quality of their work produced by their factory & retail hub in London’s Tottenham Court Road allowed them to expand greatly with further premises appearing in Paris, Buenos Aires and later Smyrna. Their clientele included Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, members of the Royal Household, the King of Siam, and Tsar Nicholas II of Russia whilst catalogues proudly announced them as “Suppliers of Her Majesty the Queen of England”.
