Fine Early Victorian Walnut Writing Table- C Hindley & Sons

19th century
Description

-Welcome to Mersham Manor Antiques-

A superb quality early Victorian walnut writing table, constructed by the renowned cabinet makers C. Hindley & Sons. (Late Miles & Edwards)

C Hindley and Sons were based at 154 Oxford Street, London, from circa 1820-1830 and are recorded in the V&A archives in 1978. Henry Miles and John Edwards were based at 134 Oxford St. London from 1822 till 1844 and appeared in directories in 1823 and 1835-39. The firm had many prestigious patrons including the Empress of Russia. In 1844 Miles and Edwards were taken over by Charles Hindley and Sons. Several account books, journals, stock lists and letter books of Miles & Edwards survive, dating 1825-44. Both companies are listed in the Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840 by the Furniture History Society.

C.1850.

A most handsome table of outstanding quality. The top is of rounded corner design, with an inset red, gold tooled leather writing surface, which is newly fitted, so completely unused. The opposing side of the desk has two decorative panels, so the table can stand in the centre of a room if required.

Standing on stylish and elegant turned and fluted legs, terminating in the original brass castors.

The right side drawer has the C. Hindley & Sons stamp.

Beautifully figured walnut throughout, with a rich colour.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
