Antique Pollard Oak Inlaid Specimen Chess Top Occasional Games Table

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: The Antique Furniture Company

Rare 19th century pollard oak specimen chess or games table, the hexagonal shaped top inlaid with chequers in prized specimen veneers including ebony, coromandel, rosewood, thuya, satinwood and burr elm and banded with amboyna and coromandel with box and ebony stringing. On a turned tapering egg & dart carved mahogany column with tripartite platform base raised on turned feet. Sympathetically cleaned and waxed, some slight solid bubbles in the veneer and marks and fading due to age.

Whilst the best cabinetmakers of the period would have had specimen pieces to show their customers examples of what different veneers looked like, they were also highly desirable items for wealthy clients who would enjoy being able to show off the ‘rare and curious’ woods within their homes.
