Pair of French Empire Console Tables

19th century
Description

A fine pair of Empire mahogany console tables with ormolu mounts of a lute player with other instruments at his feet, a leaf motif on the top of the legs and a very charming escutcheon of two squirrels; the tables have replaced breccia marble tops. Each table has identical mounts, are the same size, the same construction with identical dovetails and are clearly both made in the 19th century but the veneers on the drawers and the bases are just slightly different.

The mirrors in the back reflect the bases and make them look as if they project backwards.
