Description

A rare early-mid 19th century (circa 1830) Ceylonese solid ebony card or games table from the Galle district (formerly Ceylon, now Sri Lanka).

This wonderful table consists of a solid ebony top with a moulded edge, the top opening to reveal a tooled red leather surface which can be used for cards, games or even writing.

This leads down to the superbly carved frieze consisting of carved floral, thistle, foliate and berry decoration with a carved moulded edge below.

The table is supported on a turned and reeded solid ebony column with carved collar of various designs including carved gadroon decoration leading down to a quatreform base terminating with four scrolling carved feet.

The Galle district of Ceylon was known for producing wonderfully carved ebony pieces of furniture in the 19th century.

This table is in excellent condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home etc. – it is extremely rare to find a solid ebony card table and this table could be used as a card or games table, writing table, side or console table.
