Description:

Here is a fine quality English Georgian Regency mahogany drop leaf Pembroke table, circa 1810, in good original condition. The table is constructed of top quality solid mahogany timber and boasts the original polish. During this period, England was importing top quality timber from its colonies and other countries. The table features two elegant drop leaves to either side. The leaves can be raised to widen the table. The original wooden hinged arms underneath the tabletop support the drop leaves. There is a working drawer at the front end of the table. The drawer features the original brass ring pull lion mask handles, is pine lined and hand dovetailed and decorated with cock beading. The drawer runs smoothly and closes flush to the frame. The table stands on four straight, tapered legs. This item retains the original polish and is completely original. This table will accommodate up to six people but when the leaves are raised.

This style of table was possibly named after the Earl or Countess of Pembroke and was defined as a portable item. Interestingly, it was often used for bedside meals. It was characteristic of Georgian, Neoclassical and Federal styles, including those of Chippendale, Sheraton and Hepplewhite. It was known as one of the most useful but fashionable shapes for an antique table of its age.

Condition Report:

This table is in good original condition. The top is free from any ink stains or watermarks. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges, which is to be expected with an item of this age in original condition. The brass drawer handles are original. The wooden leaf hinges are also original and are in good working order. The table retains its original polish, which is why it boasts a stunning colour patination, which has been built up through the years of care and cleaning it has received. The table is solid in joint and ready to use.
