Superb Gilt Table by S&h Jewells of London

A superb quality small gilt side table either by or retailed by S&H Jewells of Holborn London. The table is typical of Victorian revival designs of earlier furniture and this table is inspired by the Rococo work of the Eighteenth century and makers like Chippendale. The table is of a very high quality as would be expected of a good London maker. The table is on cabriole legs united by a cross stretcher and all covered in rococo scrollwork. The condition of the table is excellent the gilding is all original and has beautifully worn in all the right places. The whole is in excellent country house condition, it has had some minor repairs but not really visible and it would have originally had castors. The white carrara marble top which is beautifully flecked in pink is not the original and has been made specifically for it. The whole is an exceptionally good example of it's type.

S and H Jewell were fine quality cabinet makers who were established in 1830. They were a family business who worked from their premises at 29-31 Little Queen Street, Holborn, in London and then later to Parker Street, LONDON. W.C.2. They are recorded to have sold furniture to the Arts and Crafts home, Standen House, East Grinstead, Sussex and stated on the receipt dated 1st May 1894, states the company was founded in 1830 but there are not many records of their earlier pieces. They also restored early pieces of antique and re sold them in their London shop, I do feel that this particular piece has been made by the company. It is marked on the underside with a large stencil.

The table dates to the early period of the company C.1850, it is small and useful and would make a perfect lamp table.
