An Important Rosewood Ebonised and Parcel Gilt Occasional Table C 1815 Attributed to Marsh and Tatham

19th century
Description

An important Regency rosewood ebonised and parcel gilt occasional table c 1815 probably made by the Royal cabinetmakers Marsh and Tatham to a design by Henry Holland the square top with beaded edge above a spiral and lappet carved stem and spreading floral carved base, with triform base on gilt claw and wing feet.

In wonderful original condition with no retouching or restoration to the gilding or ebonising. Please see further images for close up and details of the beautifully figured and faded rosewood veneers on the top.

Size : 18 inches wide 18 inches deep 28.5 inches high

This table is closely associated to a group in the late Georgian style promoted by the architect Henry Holland. Holland's designs were in part inspired by his pupil, Charles Heathcote Tatham made during a visit to Rome in the last decade of the 18th century. Henry Holland is considered to have collaborated with the furniture makers William Marsh and Thomas Tatham in the design of closely related tables for Hollands project of Southill Park, Bedfordshire. It is also significant that Thomas Tatham's brother Charles Heathcote Tatham was employed by the firm and therefore may have contributed to the designs for this commission (G. Jackson Stops, Southill Park, Country Life, 28 April 1994, fig 11) Marsh and Tatham also worked with Henry Holland and Dominique Daguerre for the Duke of Bedford at Woburn and for the Prince of Wales at Carlton House (C. Gilbert and G. Beard, Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, pp 623-624) A library table with a very similar pillar and almost identical base, recorded in the Heathcote collection at Normanton Park, Rutland is illustrated in M. Jourdain, Regency Furniture 1795-1830, 1965, fig. 172

An identical pair of tables sold £12,500 INC premium Lot 31 Dreweatts Newbury 30th June 2015

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
