Syrian Shaped Occasional Table

1900 - 1920
Description

Circa 1920, a good Syrian shaped occasional table with a British retailer’s label attached to the inside of the leg. The octagonal shaped table has a complex multiple inlaid top, with Arabic writing in the centre. The centre of the top has a mixture of wood and mother of pearl, and from this there are several geometric and marquetry panels. The various woods and mother of pearl inlay continues outwards, with geometric and floral patterns repeating. Beneath the top is a rounded corner and the base follows the form of the top as multiple inlays of chequered walnut and satinwood run down the fore edge of the legs. Finer inlay separates the legs and the quarter brackets between each of the legs have scrolling foliate inlay. Above this is a chequered board which continues all the way around. The table has wonderful style and excellent colour.
