Fine Early C19th Regency Period Ormolu-mounted Rosewood Sofa Table in 'As Found' , 'Country-house' Condition , Attributed to Gillows.

Fine early C19th Regency period ormolu-mounted rosewood sofa table in 'as found' , 'country-house' condition , attributed to Gillows.

Twin-flap rosewood and simulated rosewood , sofa table supported on classical lyre-end supports . The inverted shaped stretcher with 'faux" rosewood painted grain simulation . Fitted with 2 cedar-lined drawers to both sides , the edges mounted with fine ormolu applied mount decoration (minor sectional losses). Each of the 4 drawers fitted with 2 original gilded brass circular knobs , brass locks and key escutcheons (no key present).

The impressive Grecian-inspired dramatically shaped and moulded lyre ends with gilded brass rod 'strings' . On the lateral support to each end beneath the lyre, is a finely-cast double anthemion ended ormolu mount . The design taking its inspiration from antiquity and ancient classical Empires, as popularised in this period by the fashionable exponents of re-visited classicism such as Thomas Hope ,Charles Heathcote Tatham and George Smith.

Carved leaf detail to the hip or knee of the sabre-type legs , channelled carving to the legs which terminate in conforming channelled flush-fitting brass box socket castors .

Superb quality and design throughout , the moulded-edge top of well-chosen highly-figured timber. Attributed by design and quality to Gillows of Lancaster & London . Similar lyre-ended rosewood tables are illustrated in "Gillows of Lancaster & London" by Susan E .Stuart.

In need of some minor attention and restoration , having come straight from an English country-house source .

All original throughout , retaining its original polish and 'skin' .

A rare and exceptional table of superior quality and arresting design.
