Large Japanese Thousand Butterfly Satsuma Bowl

1900 - 1920
Description

As part of our Japanese art collection we are delighted to offer this large and nice quality Satsuma bowl , this type of decoration is more commonly known as "a thousand butterfly's" although there would be considerably more , each painted by hand in what must have been a painstaking operation lasting days if not weeks ! this particular example is finished with a gilded top rim , a geometric border to the foot rim and rather unusually the artist has decorated the underside with a sprig of prunus blossom , the bowl is nicely signed in a gilt nine character seal that translates to an artist known as Yuzan.

The bowl is in perfect un restored condition, the butterflies are as bright as the day they were painted , for total accuracy the top gilt rim has some cleaning wear, this would be a very usefull addition or start to your collection.
