French Walnut and Marquetry Work Table

Description

Circa 1860, French walnut and marquetry work table. The top is quarter veneered with rounded corners and Tunbridge style inlay in the border. There is a very stylish pictorial marquetry centre piece depicting 2 gents with pagoda type hats and Oriental clothing sitting in a garden with various umbrellas, trellis work, vases and flowers. Beneath the top there is a single drawer with floral marquetry, and various compartments inside with hinged lids for wool, cotton and other items. All of the tops of the drawers have small turned ivory knob pulls. The drawer is lockable. The sides are flame mahogany and there is a double ogee moulding again in flame mahogany. Beneath the top is a very stylish central column with a coil of mahogany over it giving the impression of a tapering barley sugar stem. The whole piece stands on 3 elegant cabriole legs finishing on paw feet.
