FAQs

Victorian games tables gained immense popularity during the mid-19th century as domestic entertainment became a central feature of drawing room social life. Master craftsmen utilised exotic veneers like burr walnut and maple to create sophisticated, multi-functional furniture.

These pieces typically feature a solid secondary wood carcass overlaid with highly figured burr walnut and contrasting maple marquetry. Construction often incorporates turned central pedestals, quadruple splayed legs, and finely chased gilt bronze or ormolu mounts.

Authenticity is determined by examining hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional timber shrinkage patterns, and the quality of the hand-engraved marquetry inlay. Maker signatures or stamps on the inner chassis can also verify provenance.

A statement antique table can serve as a striking focal point in a traditional sitting room or act as a contrasting textural element in a minimalist modern hallway. Its rich wood tones pair exceptionally well with neutral walls and subtle metallic accents.

Preserve the fragile veneer by keeping the furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking or fading. Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and occasionally applying quality beeswax.
