This is a stunning quality antique Victorian burr walnut inlaid marquetry loo table, circa 1860, in excellent original condition.

Summary:

• Item: Loo Table

The table boasts a superb burr walnut veneer top inlaid with satinwood floral marquetry to the centre of the table, which is symmetrically replicated in each quadrant around the perimeter, connected by further satinwood string inlay. The table features a top quality bulbous central ring turned pedestal, which terminates on a carved floral collar above the legs. Further below, is a finely turned drop finial. Delicate crisp blind fretwork acanthus leaf carvings are present on the central pedestal, defined by a sunken matted ground of profuse punch work. This stunning quality carved acanthus leaf detail is further evident on the knees and toes of the four splayed cabriole legs, which terminate on the original brass castors. The table also boasts its original working brassware, which consists of a sprung locking mechanism on the underside of the table, along with 2 large brass bolts. This allows the top to be lifted vertically, for storage purposes and also be detached from the pedestal for safe transportation purposes.

This style of table was called a “loo” table because wealthy ladies in grand houses during the Victorian period, played the card game ‘loo’ sitting around the table whilst taking afternoon tea, hence the name ‘loo table’.

The table can accommodate between 4 – 6 persons and is sufficiently tall enough to comfortably fit your legs underneath. It is also sufficiently wide enough to accommodate serving dishes in the centre of the table.

Dimensions:

Table Height = 73.6cm or 29” or 2ft 5”

Knee Height = 68.8cm or 27” or 2ft 3”

Width = 106cm or 41¾” or 3ft 5¾”

Depth = 137cm or 54” or 4ft 6”

Condition Report:

The table is in excellent original condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. There are no marks, damage, stains, or scratches to the top. All marquetry inlay is present and in excellent condition. There are no missing screw studs to the underside of the table and original brass locking mechanism is complete and in excellent working order, which is rare to see. The table features the original top, base, pedestal, and legs, locking brassware and brass castors. The table boasts a fantastic colour and patination. The table is solid in joint and is ready to use.
