Late C19th Indian ivory-inlaid rectangular centre-table on folding base. Highly decorative large size centre/coffee table of superior quality and scale . Intricately ivory-inlaid 'shisham' (Indian rosewood)top and hinged and folding frame base . The Moorish-style arcaded base fitted with brass hinges and wooden swivel brackets to secure the top.

Although Turkish in inspiration, these types of tables were made in several parts of late C19th British India. Produced principally in response to the growing fashion in Europe for Middle Eastern and Islamic furnishings and decorative accessories.

Tables of this kind were produced in Hoshiapur,a town in the Punjab known for it's workmanship in ivory inlay. Exported to Europe, they were sold by retailers such as 'Liberty & Co.' ,London, who featured similar octagonal examples in a catalogue of 1896.

Though collapsible for ease of movement and transportation, when the top is located upon its fixings , the table becomes a stable and rigid platform.

In excellent original condition , with no losses or repairs.
