Here is an example of a superb quality antique Art Deco German Biedermeier influenced bird’s eye maple sofa table, circa 1930, in original condition. The table is constructed of top quality Bird’s eye maple veneer and boasts a stunning burr figuration to the tabletop. The table features two elegant brass hinged drop leaf sides. The leaves can be raised to widen the table and locked in place by a pull out extending bar on the underside of the table. The table sits on a central reeeded column, which terminates on an ebonised collar. The base of the table is supported by elegant down swept ebonised feet.
The Biedermeier period refers to an era in Central Europe during which the middle-class grew and arts appealed to common sensibilities in the historical period between 1815, the year of the Congress of Vienna at the end of the Napoleonic Wars, and 1848, the year of the European revolutions. Although the term itself is a historical reference, it is predominantly used to denote the artistic styles that flourished in the fields of literature, music, the visual arts and interior design.
The table features a rich yellow bird’s eye maple colour. As its boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
Condition Report:
This table is in excellent original condition. The top is free from any ink stains, ring marks or watermarks. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of this item. The brass leaf hinges are also original and are in good working order. The table features a rich yellow bird’s eye maple colour. As its boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. The table is solid in joint (not lose or wobbly) and is ready to use.
