A pair of late Victorian Staffordshire earthenware flatback figures dating from circa 1890 depicts an Irish piper in a red coat and an Irish colleen wearing a yellow headscarf. Modelled with relief moulding and hand-painted enamels, the figures rest upon inscribed pedestal bases and display white, green, brown, and red glazes. The piper holds a set of uilleann pipes while wearing a red coat, green trousers, and a red top hat, showing paint loss and two small chips to the brim of the hat. The colleen stands barefoot with a yellow headscarf, a green shawl, a white apron, and a red skirt, featuring an old, short hairline to the back and no restoration. Standing 34 cm high, these figures measure 34 cm. In a contemporary home, this pair of ceramic figures provides a decorative focal point on a mantelpiece. The flatback design allows the figures to sit flush against a vertical surface in an English country house setting. Each piece displays traditional Victorian craftsmanship suitable for display on a shelf, sideboard, or mantelpiece where ceramic collections are gathered.

FAQs

Victorian Staffordshire flatbacks are lead-glazed earthenware ceramic ornaments produced in Staffordshire, England, during the 19th century, designed with unpainted flat backs to sit flush against domestic mantelpieces.

Flatback figures were created using press-moulds or slip-casting with earthenware clay, fired, covered in a clear glaze, and decorated by hand using overglaze enamel paints.

Authentic 19th-century examples typically feature a plain, unglazed or flat back, small air-release holes from the moulding process, natural glaze crazing, and gentle wear to the overglaze paint on raised surfaces.

Ceramic flatback pairs can be arranged on a fireplace mantelpiece, integrated into open bookshelf styling, or paired with contemporary ceramics to create visual contrast.

Dust the figures gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft-bristled brush, avoiding water immersion and chemical detergents that could damage overglaze enamels or enter fine glaze cracks.
