Nymphenburg Porcelain Figure of a Great Dane in Sitting Position

1920 - 1940
Description

An exceptionally well-modelled German porcelain figure of a seated Great Dane, modelled by Konrad Schmid and produced at the celebrated Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory in Bavaria during the early 20th century.

The imposing dog is depicted in an alert, upright position, with finely modelled cropped ears, a powerful chest and beautifully observed musculature. The naturalistic decoration combines warm fawn tones with subtle grey shading, complemented by a finely detailed black muzzle and expressive eyes.

This German porcelain figure of a seated Great Dane dates from the period around 1930 and belongs to the Art Deco style. Modelled by Konrad Schmid at the Nymphenburg factory in Bavaria, the piece is made from glazed porcelain with a smooth, glossy finish. The animal appears in an alert, upright pose with erect, cropped ears, a broad chest, visible musculature, and a tail curled around the hind legs. The naturalistic decoration employs warm fawn colouring supplemented by subtle grey shading, a dark black muzzle, and painted eyes. Markings on the ceramic include an impressed factory shield, model number 633, and painted initials J.H. The figurine stands 23 cm high. In a modern interior, this Nymphenburg sculpture suits display upon a sideboard top within a gentleman's library or a study. The smooth ceramic surface reflects interior lighting while the neutral fawn palette integrates easily with existing wood furniture and decorative objects. Collectors of 20th-century European ceramics and animal figures will find the clean modelling and original glossy glaze characteristic of the manufactory's output during the interwar period.

Founded in 1747 in Bavaria, the Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory became renowned for its high-grade hard-paste porcelain and naturalistic animal models. During the twentieth century, sculptors produced anatomically precise representations of domestic and wild animals, capturing characteristic poses and subtle colour variations.

Figurines are cast in plaster moulds using liquid clay slip, assembled by hand, and fired at elevated temperatures. Craftsmen apply subtle underglaze or overglaze paints before a final firing to achieve realistic anatomical tones and a glossy, durable finish.

Authentic pieces feature the impressed shield mark of the Bavarian coat of arms on the underside or base. Many historical models also include impressed model numbers, artist initials, or impressed year stamps indicating the manufacture period.

A porcelain animal sculpture provides a striking accent when placed atop a wooden sideboard, within a glazed bookcase, or on a mantelpiece. Pairing the clean ceramic surface with darker wood or metallic elements creates balanced visual contrast.

Clean glazed porcelain by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft brush. Avoid abrasive cleaners, chemical solvents, or immersing hollow figures in water, as moisture can accumulate inside unglazed interior cavities.
