Antique Victorian Bamboo Occasional Table C.1890

19th century
Description

A late 19th century bamboo occasional table, the octagonal top raised on gently splayed legs united by a lower triangular tier and reinforced by typical decorative supports below the tabletop. A good original example with excellent colour, showcasing the fashionable Aesthetic Movement’s Anglo-Japanese influence of the period.

Very good antique condition with only some light wear to the original woven surfaces consistent with age, and one later replacement decorative support piece below the tabletop. Structurally sound and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1890.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

  • Period19th century
  • SizeH 66 cm (26 in) x W 42 cm (17 in) x D 42 cm (17 in)

This late 19th-century Victorian occasional table stems from the Aesthetic Movement, reflecting a popular Anglo-Japanese style of the period. Built in England around 1890, the piece consists of a slender bamboo framework displaying a rich brown finish with mottled natural figuring. An octagonal woven top sits above three gently splayed legs, which are joined by a lower triangular tier and reinforced with delicate diagonal brackets beneath the surface. Visible details include light wear across the textured surfaces and one later replacement support piece tucked under the tabletop. The construction measures 66 cm high, 42 cm wide, and 42 cm deep. Today, the table functions practically in a living room, hallway, or bedroom as a compact surface for lamps, books, or decorative objects. Its small footprint allows it to fit neatly into corners or beside seating areas while adding period character to an interior.
