Royal Worcester Pair of Lady's Slipper Orchid Wall Pockets, 1886

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

An exceptionally rare Victorian pair of Royal Worcester porcelain wall pockets, shaped as lady's-slipper orchids and dating to 1886; the design of this model was originally developed and introduced into production in 1881. This model is recognised by experts as an outstanding example of late 19th-century British decorative art.

Made during Victorian Orchidomania, this finely moulded Blush Ivory pair reflects the period's intense British fascination with exotic orchids and decorative objects inspired by them.

The reverse of each pocket bears the green printed overglaze Royal Worcester crown-and-circle mark, used as a sign of exclusivity for costly, individually made interior pieces such as these wall pockets; the letter X is the factory date code for 1886.

Their elaborate moulding, deep relief and thin projecting petals made production technically difficult and resulted in a high rate of kiln loss, making survival as a closely matched pair particularly notable for collectors of rare Royal Worcester and historical English porcelain.

Dimensions: the first wall pocket weighs 353 g and measures 21 cm long, 16 cm wide and 6.8 cm high. The second weighs 350 g and measures 21 cm long, 16 cm wide and 6.7 cm high.

Condition: The first wall pocket has traces of glue on the rear hanging fitting. These are surface marks rather than evidence of repair. There is a small area of dullness to the reverse gilding and two areas of cloudy enamel on the white reverse surface of the flower. Otherwise, it is in ideal condition, with complete preservation of the gold and painted decoration. The second wall pocket has slight traces of pale paint on the reverse where the petals join the body; they do not give the impression of being connected with damage. Otherwise, it is in excellent condition. All the noted imperfections are very small and have virtually no effect on the overall appearance of the wall pockets.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.

This Victorian pair of Royal Worcester porcelain wall pockets originates from 1886 and belongs to the Aesthetic Movement style. Each piece takes the naturalistic form of a lady's slipper orchid, complete with a fluted dorsal sepal, horizontal petals, and a rounded pouch. The design is rendered in an ivory and gold colour palette, featuring fine hand-painted details including speckled brown dots within the interior throat and elaborate gilded highlights across the surfaces. The fine moulding creates a deep relief with thin projecting edges. Each wall pocket measures 21 cm long, 16 cm wide, and 6.8 cm high. In a modern interior, this matching pair functions as decorative wall vases mounted on narrow wall spaces in a sunlit conservatory, hallway, or drawing room. They mount securely to vertical surfaces to hold small floral arrangements or display on their own as historical works of English ceramic art. The porcelain construction benefits from gentle dusting with a soft dry cloth to preserve the delicate glaze and gold leaf highlights.

Aesthetic Movement ceramic wall pockets were decorative ceramic vessels created during the late 19th century, designed to hang on walls to hold floral displays. Influenced by naturalistic forms, Japanese art, and botanical illustration, these pieces emphasised artistic form, delicate moulding, and subtle colouration over purely utilitarian function.

Late 19th-century Royal Worcester pieces were typically crafted using fine bone china or ivory porcelain, often featuring a soft matte finish known as blush ivory. Decorative elements were highlighted using liquid gold, raised gilding, or subtle hand-painted enamels.

Authentic 1880s Royal Worcester items feature the companys printed factory mark, which includes a crown over a circle containing the number 51 and dots indicating the year of manufacture. From 1886 onwards, specific date letters or dot arrangements were added to the mark, alongside impressed shape numbers and registration marks.

Porcelain wall pockets can be hung as symmetrical pairs flanking a central mirror, art print, or chimney breast. They function effectively as wall art on narrow wall spaces or integrated into gallery walls, with or without dried botanical arrangements.

Gilded antique porcelain should be dusted gently using a soft, clean camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid soaking the pieces in water or using harsh chemical cleaners, as water can penetrate fine crazing and abrasives will strip gilded highlights.
