Description

Heals 1920’s Teak Garden Set- Table & Four Chairs – Labelled

A very good example of a 1920’s solid slatted teak square garden dining table with four original dining chairs that fit neatly under the table when not in use. This Heals set have been in the same family since it was purchased from Heals in the twenties. The slatted teak garden table is the best model having the silhouette urn shaped legs with a round under shelf. Complete with the metal makers label Castles 160 Milbank London, who were ship breakers, they took teak timbers form decommissioned ships and re-used the teak into garden furniture for Heals of London. This set is in very good, complete condition and has been refinished and made very waterproof at a high cost by the original owners relative. So it can be kept outside, year round.

This 1920s Arts and Crafts garden dining set comprises a square table and four matching chairs constructed from solid teak with a warm brown timber finish. The table stands on silhouette urn-shaped legs supporting a round lower shelf, accompanied by four corner-fitting chairs featuring vertical slatted backrests and square legs joined by mortise and tenon joinery. Each piece displays visible wood grain patterns across its slatted surfaces, with the four chairs neatly tucking flush beneath the tabletop when not in use. A metal maker's label from Castles of Millbank London is attached to the furniture. Measuring 71 cm in height by 91 cm in width and 91 cm in depth, this refinished and waterproofed grouping is designed for year-round outdoor use on a patio or terrace, or inside a sunlit conservatory.

Furniture from this period often integrated Arts and Crafts principles with functional modernism, featuring sturdy joinery, weather-resistant timbers, and practical space-saving designs tailored for suburban gardens and terraces.

Teak and oak were primary choices due to their high natural oil content and dense grain structure, which offer inherent resistance to moisture, rot, and insect damage.

Authentic pieces frequently bear an ivory, bone, or metal makers badge affixed to the frame, alongside precise mortise and tenon joinery and characteristic slatted timber construction.

Position the ensemble on a stone patio, within a sunlit conservatory, or in an urban courtyard, pairing the natural wood tone with neutral linen cushions and terracotta planters.

Clean the surface periodically with mild soapy water and a soft brush to remove dirt, and optionally apply dedicated teak oils or sealants to maintain the warm wood tone or allow it to weather naturally into a silver-grey patina.
