Ritas Bazaar has dated this piece to the Victorian era.

Pale green Parian drapery contrasts with the ivory-white figures, while small gilt stars and fine gilt lines accent the sweeping folds. Both figures stand on circular tree-stump bases finished with gilt bands. This restrained use of pale green, ivory white and gilding gives the pair its particular refinement.

James Hadley (1837–1903) trained at Kerr & Binns in Worcester and was principal modeller at Royal Worcester by 1870. The animated drapery and opposing poses show his distinctive approach to figure modelling. "Before the Wind" was first made around 1862 and "Against the Wind" around 1865; the pair was produced over an extended period in several finishes.

Such polychrome versions were more labour-intensive and produced in smaller numbers than standard ivory figures, making them notably rarer and more desirable to collectors.
