Chinese Canton Famille Rose Travelling Teapot & Original Wicker Case – Qing Dynasty

19th century
Description

An attractive late 19th-century Chinese Canton famille rose porcelain travelling teapot, dating to the late Qing dynasty, circa 1880–1900, complete with its fitted woven wicker carrying case.

The cylindrical porcelain teapot is beautifully hand-decorated in the traditional Canton famille rose palette, with colourful figural scenes depicting Chinese domestic and courtyard life, interspersed with finely painted birds, butterflies, flowering peonies and scrolling foliage.

The richly detailed decoration features characteristic pink, green, turquoise, iron-red and gilt enamels, with shaped ornamental reserves and smaller circular bird-and-flower medallions.

The teapot retains its matching shallow porcelain cover, decorated with a central floral spray, together with its traditional cord-wrapped carrying handle, suspended between pierced porcelain lugs on the shoulders. A gracefully curved porcelain spout completes the distinctive form.

Of particular interest is the accompanying fitted travelling case, constructed from tightly woven natural cane or rattan, with a hinged lid, metal fastening plate and carrying fittings. The interior retains its striking red fabric lining and protective padding, originally intended to cushion and protect the porcelain during transportation.

These distinctive travelling teapots are an appealing form of Chinese export porcelain, combining traditional tea-drinking customs with the decorative craftsmanship of late Qing Canton workshops.

Dimensions – Porcelain Teapot

* Height: 14cm

* Length, including spout: approximately 15cm

* Width: approximately 11.5cm

The original-style wicker travelling case displays age-related wear, while the red fabric lining is significantly frayed and worn, with areas of exposed padding.

The photographs form an important part of the condition description and should be examined carefully.

This late 19th-century Chinese Canton famille rose porcelain travelling teapot dates to the late Qing dynasty, circa 1880 to 1900, and comes complete with its original fitted woven wicker carrying case. The cylindrical ceramic body carries a hand-painted polychrome palette of pink, green, turquoise, iron-red, and gilt enamels depicting figural court scenes within ornamental reserves, alongside floral borders, birds, butterflies, and scrolling foliage. A curved white spout projects from one side, while a cord-wrapped handle attaches via pierced porcelain shoulder lugs above a shallow matching cover. The accompanying cylindrical wicker case features a hinged lid, a dark metal fastening plate, and a red fabric interior lining. Visible flaws include a chip to the upper neck rim, enamel and gilding wear, discolouration near the spout and lugs, and fraying on the fabric lining. Measuring 14 cm high, 15 cm wide, and 11.5 cm deep, this export porcelain piece sits well upon a sideboard top as a decorative tabletop display object. The item integrates historic Chinese tea-drinking customs with export craftsmanship, retaining its protective travel housing for modern interior presentation. Collectors of Qing dynasty ceramics find practical appeal in the survival of both the fragile porcelain body and the matching rattan housing together. The dense polychrome decoration offers a vibrant focal point for traditional and eclectic interior schemes alike, bringing historical narrative and textural variety to a designated display surface within the home.

Famille Rose is a style of Chinese export porcelain characterised by opaque overglaze enamels, predominantly featuring rose-pink tones introduced during the Qing Dynasty in the 18th century.

These sets typically feature a cylindrical porcelain teapot decorated with enamels, housed inside a custom-fitted padded wicker or rattan basket with metal clasps designed to insulate the tea and protect the vessel during transport.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-painted polychrome decoration with visible brushwork, slightly uneven enamel depth, iron-red highlights, and natural age wear on exposed unglazed foot rims and metal hardware.

Position the teapot alongside or within its woven casing on a sideboard, display shelf, or console table to add historic texture and vibrant colour to a contemporary decorative scheme.

Dust the porcelain gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid immersing the vessel or its padded wicker casing in water to preserve the delicate enamels, interior lining, and woven fibres.
