Large Carved Oak Extending Table Circa 1880

Description

A magnificent late Victorian carved oak wind-out extending dining table, dating to circa 1890. Of particularly impressive proportions, the table extends from a substantial 152 cm (5 ft) circular dining table to an exceptional 357 cm (11 ft 8½ in) when fully open using its four removable leaves. Making it suitable for twelve to fourteen people depending on the width of the chairs.

The beautiful oak top is surrounded by a deeply carved decorative edge and raised on four exceptionally well-carved and substantial turned legs, incorporating foliate decoration and carved floral blocks. The table retains its traditional winding extension mechanism, allowing the four leaves to be added or removed as required.

An outstanding country-house dining table, combining impressive scale with the considerable advantage of reducing to an attractive circular table when not required for larger gatherings.
