Description

A very fine Spode Chinoiserie Caneware 'Box' Teapot c.1790. The convex-sided 'box', with roundels decorated with moulded decoration in the Chinoiserie style, accompanied by elaborate enamelling elsewhere on the body and on the lid with a white background and blue trailing vines. 

Impressed mark 'Spode' to the base

Literature: The Spode Society Review Volume 4 published May 2013 for an excellent article about these 'Box' Caneware Teapots. 

Condition: Excellent with no damage or restoration

FAQs

Caneware is an unglazed, buff-coloured dry-body stoneware developed in Staffordshire during the late eighteenth century. Formulated to resemble bamboo or sugarcane, it was used extensively by makers such as Spode and Wedgwood for refined tea services and decorative tablewares.

Caneware was made using native buff-burning clays fired at high temperatures to achieve a vitrified stoneware body. Decoration was typically applied using press-moulded sprigs, enamel painting, or underglaze cobalt blue oxides before a final low-temperature firing.

Authentic pieces feature sharp relief detail, crisp moulding, and a smooth, unglazed matte exterior. Period examples from circa 1790 often bear impressed maker marks, such as SPODE, or hand-painted painter marks on the base.

Antique ceramics serve as focal points when displayed on a sideboard, within a glass-fronted cabinet, or placed on a mantlepiece. The contrast between warm buff stoneware and vibrant blue glazes complements both classic wooden furniture and modern minimal settings.

Dry-body stoneware should be dusted with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or brush. Avoid soaking, hot water, or harsh detergents, as porous unglazed areas can absorb moisture and damage delicate relief work or cold-painted elements.
