This Victorian Staffordshire earthenware inkwell from 1860 depicts a reclining tan greyhound resting atop a deep cobalt blue shaped base, with hand-painted brown and blue details across the ceramic body and a glossy glaze finish. A small circular pen aperture is visible on the upper surface of the base near the centre, alongside subtle textural variations in the hand-painted markings and a clean white muzzle contrasting with the dark nose. The piece measures 13 cm high, 6.5 cm wide, and 19 cm deep. Suitable for an office desk within an English Country House interior scheme, the inkwell functions as a decorative writing accessory that brings traditional pottery craftsmanship into contemporary studies or libraries. Placed on a wooden desktop, it holds pens while adding period character and colour to a workspace.

Produced during the 19th century in Staffordshire, England, these functional ceramic desk accessories feature a reclining greyhound or whippet resting on a base constructed with an aperture to hold ink or quills.

These pieces were crafted from press-moulded earthenware, finished with lead glazes, cobalt blue underglaze tinting, and detailed overglaze enamel painting.

Authentic period pieces display signs of age such as natural glaze crazing, unglazed bottom edges revealing soft earthenware, small air-release holes from the moulding process, and slight surface wear to overglaze enamels.

Position the piece on an office desk, integrate it into a bookshelf vignette alongside leather-bound books, or display it on a mantelpiece alongside brass accoutrements.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding submersion in water or abrasive chemical detergents that can erode overglaze paint and gilded highlights.
