Large Early 19th Staffs Hound and Hare C1840

19th century
For Sale by Aramis Antiques
Description

A substantial Staffordshire potteries model of a greyhound or lurcher and captured hare c1840. Handsomely standing over his prey, the hound’s near foreleg stands separate from the supporting foliage and his tail curls graciously round his near hind leg. In exceptional condition for its age, the only tiny fault I can find is a minute loss of glaze on his nearside ear tip. Lovely modelling, colours and glaze.

Date of Manufacture

Aramis Antiques has dated this Staffordshire Hound Hare Figure to the 1800s.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1800s:
Small circular vent hole on the reverse: standard Victorian kiln venting.
Applied shredded clay moss tufts: typical mid-nineteenth-century Staffordshire workshop practice.
Cobalt blue line on the plinth: hand-applied underglaze colour of the period.
Unglazed resting rim with ground dirt: decades of standing on a chimneypiece.

This early 19th-century Staffordshire pottery figurine depicts a standing hound over a captured hare on an oval base. Modelled in earthenware with a glossy lead glaze, the piece displays a buff brown hound with a faint collar, a crouching pinkish-brown hare, and green foliage rising from a cobalt blue base with textured shredded clay moss accents. The standing hound has an outstretched neck, a near foreleg separated from the supporting foliage, and a tail curving around its near hind leg, alongside a minute loss of glaze on the nearside ear tip. The object measures 26 cm high, 21 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. Placed on a mantelpiece in an English Country House interior, the figurine brings Victorian decorative arts character to a traditional home setting. The colourful lead-glazed earthenware construction complements classic fireplace surrounds, bookshelves, or side tables while providing a traditional sculptural focal point for collectors of antique pottery figures.

FAQs

A Staffordshire hound and hare figure is a press-moulded earthenware ceramic sculpture produced in the Staffordshire potteries district of England during the nineteenth century, depicting a hunting dog alongside its prey.

These items were manufactured using earthenware clay, moulded in separate sections, and joined before firing. They were finished with clear lead glazes and hand-painted with underglaze oxide colours or enamel decoration.

Authentic pieces generally display evidence of hand-painting, small release holes on the underside or back to prevent cracking during firing, natural surface crazing, and gentle wear on the unglazed base edges.

This type of ceramic object functions well placed centrally on a mantelpiece, styled among leather-bound volumes on a bookcase, or positioned on a hallway console table to add historical texture.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth or microfibre brush. Avoid immersion in water or the use of harsh chemical cleaners, as moisture can enter fine glaze cracks and cause discolouration.
