Extensive raised enamel and hand-painted gilding: high-standard Meiji to Taisho export artistry.
Smooth softening to the unglazed foot rim: decades of gentle handling.

This Satsuma earthenware dish dates from the Meiji or Taisho period, around 1910, and originates from the Kyoto workshop of Koshida. The circular piece has a cream-coloured glazed base with rich gold leaf accents, alongside multi-coloured enamel decoration displaying a vibrant landscape of pheasants, wisteria trees, a cascading waterfall, and detailed floral arrangements framed by a patterned gilt border. The Koshida mark is visible within a dark rectangular cartouche on the reverse, accompanied by the Shimazu family crest. Measuring 25 cm in diameter, the dish shows subtle surface glaze reflection under light. In a modern interior, this decorative plate makes an eye-catching display piece for a sideboard top, entryway console table, or open shelving unit. The maximalist design brings traditional Japanese craftsmanship into contemporary living spaces, offering an engaging focal point for a collector's cabinet or dining room display.

Satsuma pottery originated in the Satsuma province of Japan, characterised by an earthenware body with a cream-coloured finely crackled glaze, decorated with enamel and elaborate gilding.

It is crafted from low-fired earthenware overlaid with a clear glaze that naturally develops micro-crackle patterns, upon which intricate polychrome enamels and gold leaf detailing are hand-painted.

Authentic pieces feature fine, precise hand-painted enamel details, age-appropriate wear to the gilding, a distinct cream crackle glaze, and maker signatures or seals painted on the underside.

Display the dish vertically on a wooden plate stand on a sideboard, or group it within a wall gallery alongside traditional artwork to add texture and historical narrative.

Clean gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or abrasive materials that could erode the delicate gold gilding and enamel.
