18th Century Oak Folding Coaching Table C. 1790

18th century
Description

A rarely seen late 18th century solid oak coaching or cricket table which has retained its original folding mechanism.

The solid oak circular top made of two joined boards over the original oak frame with folding gate-leg on original iron hinges and with pegged joints.

Fabulous patination and original throughout.

Lots of old marks, dings and bruises. Normal wear to the feet. Not wormed.

A wonderful vernacular and well loved Georgian table with a really good colour and rich and deep natural patina.

Stands firm and level and folds to a small size.

These early domestic tables were used as supper or tea tables, sometimes as games table within modest homes.

Usually made by local wrights, many incorporated a lower tier which among other uses is believed to be used for placing your mug of beer whilst playing cards in the local tavern.

This rare folding example was perhaps pulled out as an extra table in a tavern or made for use in a small humble cottage. It could also be used whilst travelling on a horse drawn coach, hence the name and portability. Some were taken into the battle field as campaign furniture.

Such a table would have been in very frequent use and a part of normal domestic life – with no doubt many fascinating stories to tell.

A really lovely 18th century coaching table with a wonderful tactile quality and great character.

Dimensions are:

21 inches diameter, 26 inches high. When folded the table is 36 inches high and about 5 inches deep.
