Pair of Staffordshire pottery Snow Leopards, c. 1820.

A rare pair of Staffordshire pottery figures of Snow Leopards, c. 1820. The leopards, modelled recumbent, upon a green mound base, and painted with black spots, on a white ground.

Covered in a pearlware glaze.

Length – 9.2 cm, 3 5/8”.

Height – 5.7 cm, 2 1/4”.

Width – 4.7 cm, 1 7/8”.

Condition – Small chip to one base. As you will see in the images, the left hand leopard has a deep firing crack to the inside, but it does not penetrate through the figure. No restoration.

FAQs

Developed in Staffordshire, England, during the late 18th century, pearlware added cobalt oxide to lead glaze to achieve a whiter finish. Local potteries produced accessible lead-glazed earthenware animal and figure groups for domestic display throughout the Georgian and Regency periods.

These ornaments were produced using press-moulded earthenware clay, coated in a cobalt-tinted lead glaze, and subsequently hand-decorated with underglaze slip or enamel colours before firing.

Authentic pieces feature a slight bluish tint where glaze pools in crevices, faint mould seam lines, hand-applied enamel decoration, and lightweight porous clay bodies often featuring small firing vent holes on the underside.

Position small ceramic animal figures symmetrically on a mantelpiece, console table, or stacked atop design books on a bookshelf to introduce historical interest and texture into contemporary spaces.

Dust figures gently with a soft microfibre cloth or natural bristle brush. Avoid immersing earthenware in water or using harsh chemicals, as moisture can penetrate glaze crazing and damage fragile enamel paints.
