Antique English Victorian Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Tyg ~ Florence E. Barlow

19th century
For Sale by Antiques4EU
Description

A fine Late 19th Century Antique English Victorian Doulton Lambeth Silver Mounted Stoneware Tyg, bearing the monogram of one of Doulton's most collectable artists, Florence Elizabeth Barlow. This early work is dated 1876, just three years after Florence joined her sister Hannah, who had herself begun work at the Doulton Lambeth Art Studio in 1871. The tyg is unusual in that the piece is decorated in "sgraffito" with cattle, goats and a donkey, this notwithstanding that, by mutual consent, it had been decided by the sisters that Florence would paint flowers and birds and Hannah would concentrate on horses and other animals. Further, not only is the base signed with the artist's monogram, but is fully marked with the Doulton Lambeth impressed mark of the period { c. 1869 - 77 }, the date of production, 1876, being here present within a circular variation of Godden's Mark No. 1340, which was, according to Geoffrey Godden, rarely used. The applied silver rim of the period and fully hallmarked for London 1876.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A tyg is a large ceramic vessel featuring three or more handles, designed primarily for sharing beverages during traditional social gatherings in 17th to 19th-century Britain.

Victorian salt-glazed stoneware was kiln-fired at high temperatures for durability, often decorated using sgraffito incising, liquid slip beadwork, and cobalt or manganese glazes alongside fitted metal rims.

Authentic Doulton Lambeth wares feature impressed factory stamps on the base, model numbers, and incised monograms corresponding to specific studio artists and assistants.

A multi-handled stoneware vessel serves as a focal accent when displayed on a sideboard, mantlepiece, or within a glass display cabinet alongside contemporary minimalist decor.

Dust the ceramic body with a soft cloth and avoid submersion in water to prevent moisture trapping behind the silver rim, polishing metal elements carefully with a specialized jeweller cloth.
