This Victorian ceramic butter dish belongs to the late 19th-century English country house style of tableware, originating from the Victoria Pottery in Glasgow. The cylindrical earthenware vessel wears a cream glaze finished with a brown transfer print, a crown motif, scrollwork, flag detailing featuring red, blue, green, and yellow, and gilding, while the lid carries a small knop handle. Signs of age-related staining appear across the surface alongside a small crack to the handle. The piece measures 12.5 cm high, 12.5 cm wide, and 12.5 cm deep. Display this lidded dish on a kitchen island as functional tableware or as a decorative accent within a traditional dining space. It suits open shelving or a dresser top where the transfer-printed patriotic inscription remains visible. The compact footprint makes it practical for everyday kitchen storage or as a table accessory for butter service during meals.

Late 19th-century British potteries produced widespread transferware ceramics to mark national pride, royal jubilees, and naval history, converting everyday kitchen items into functional patriotic objects.

These vessels were typically crafted from glazed earthenware or ironstone, utilizing transfer-printed patterns that were sometimes enhanced with hand-applied polychrome enamels prior to final firing.

Original pieces usually feature printed maker marks or registration numbers on the base, alongside fine glaze crazing and authentic wear patterns around the unglazed foot rim.

Display this piece on a kitchen island, dresser, or sideboard top as a decorative accent, styling it alongside natural wood, copper, and unglazed stoneware.

Wash gently by hand using warm water and mild liquid soap, avoiding abrasive pads or dishwashers that could wear down the glaze or degrade hand-coloured details.
