Description

A superb and original Charles II period solid oak rotating Pillar Table, made by hand in c. 1660 with ball carved column and original large birdcage action.

The birdcage box united with well turned spindles and framed with extruded corners - each corner with well carved and curved borders.

.

Set on its original triform hocked base with bun feet and original pegged joints.

.

The four board octagonal top is original also and the table turns smoothly and is beautifully balanced and proportioned – a testament to the maker that it turns exactly as it did in 1660 (please see video).

These tables are intricate and were not commonplace. Their desirability reflected the changes in British society and increasing wealth available for luxury items with which to enjoy newly found leisure time.

At this time tea drinking had become even more popular due to the wife of Charles II (Catherine Braganza) introducing tea ceremonies as a convivial pastime (and a subtle way to demonstrate your education, fine manners and wealth) to the Royal Court where it immediately became highly fashionable.

These tables were crafted entirely from oak by skilled joiners and were used as tea tables, side tables and gaming tables.

The colour of the oak on this table is superbly developed and naturally rich with a soft glowing patina.
