Masons Ironstone is a patented heavy earthenware developed in early 19th century England by Miles Mason, designed to imitate costly Oriental porcelain while offering greater durability for everyday use.

Ironstone is composed of a mixture of pottery stone, ball clay, china stone, and a proportion of slag from iron smelting, fired at high temperatures to create a dense, stone-like body that resists chipping.

Authentic early pieces often feature impressed or printed crown marks with the Patent Ironstone China stamp, hand-painted underglaze polychrome details, and characteristic weight and crazing consistent with 1810-1830 production.

Antique ironstone pieces add textural contrast and historical depth when displayed on open shelving, used as sculptural vessels for dried botanicals, or grouped by pattern on a sideboard.

Antique ironstone should be washed by hand in warm water using a mild, non-abrasive detergent and soft cloth, avoiding sudden temperature changes to prevent stress on the historic glaze and body.
