Staffordshire pottery dogs were mass-produced in the Staffordshire region of England during the Victorian era, primarily between the mid-19th and early 20th centuries. They were designed as affordable decorative ornaments for mantelpieces in middle-class homes.

These figures were typically slip-cast or hand-pressed in earthenware clay, then hand-painted with underglaze colours and metallic lustres before being fired in a kiln.

Authentic pieces often feature crackle glaze, crazing, vent holes at the base, hand-painted details with slight asymmetries, and characteristic lead glaze finishes without modern maker marks.

They can be displayed traditionally on mantelpieces or styled unexpectedly on bookshelves, console tables, or kitchen dressers to add a touch of historical character and eclectic charm.

Clean them gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid using water, harsh chemicals, or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the delicate antique glaze and painted surface.
