Good Large Pair Chinese Porcelain Ducks Ming Style Sancai Glaze

Description

This is a beautiful pair of Qing Dynasty Chinese porcelain ducks on hardwood stands dating from the early 20th century circa 1910.

The pair are a really good size so are most imposing in these beautiful Sancai colours. The ducks are styled in the Ming tradition, seated naturalistically on good quality solid rosewood bases.

Both are stamped with factory marks impressed to the base.

The pair have great charm and character and are modelled life size so make quite an impression at 26 cms long 25 cms in height and 14 cms deep.

Sancai, meaning three colours, is a technique originating in the Tang Dynasty that uses lead-glazed earthenware fired at lower temperatures. The palette traditionally includes green, amber, yellow, and cream glazes, often applied to funerary objects, vessels, and stylised animal figures produced through subsequent dynasties including the Ming and Qing periods.

These figures are crafted from kaolin clay bodies or terracotta and finished with lead-oxide glazes tinted with mineral oxides such as copper for green and iron for yellow or brown. The figures often rest on separate custom-carved hardwood stands to elevate and protect the porcelain bases.

Authentic or faithful Ming-style pieces exhibit fine glaze crazing, controlled dripping or pooling of pigments, unglazed interior foot rims, and visible signs of manual moulding and hand-incised feather or scale detailing.

A paired set of ceramic figures can be styled symmetrically on a wooden sideboard, arranged on a deep window sill, or placed on a mantlepiece to provide visual balance and vibrant colour contrast in contemporary spaces.
