Description

A beautiful and very well made antique William IV rosewood writing desk. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1830-1850 period.

It is of superb quality and is a great size. This has a smart and versatile design, meaning it could work well in a variety of interiors. The top has a two drawers that runs right across, it sits on two bold baluster legs that sit on platform bases with beautifully carved hairy paw feet. The back is also nicely finished, so this can be used as a free standing item.

We have recently had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some minor wear and small old marks beneath the polish here and there.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

William IV furniture, produced roughly between 1830 and 1837, bridges the Regency and early Victorian periods, characterised by heavy classical influences, robust proportions, and detailed carved ornamentation.

Cabinetmakers during this era predominantly utilised dense exotic hardwoods such as rosewood and mahogany, often featuring secondary structural timbers like pine or oak within drawer construction.

Authentic pieces typically display period-accurate hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawers, rich natural grain patterns in the timber, and heavy pedestal bases with carved feet, alongside appropriate patination.

Pairing a dark timber antique desk with minimalist modern seating or placing it against a neutral wall creates a balanced focal point that highlights the rich texture of the wood.

Maintain antique rosewood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax.
