Wonderful Colour Late 18th-Century George III Mahogany & Satinwood String Inlaid Fold-Over Tea Table

A superb late 18th-century George III mahogany fold-over tea table, of elegant D-shaped form, finely inlaid throughout with satinwood stringing and banding. The top is crafted from beautifully figured flame mahogany with delicate satinwood inlay, and hinges open to reveal an interior of rich, unfaded mahogany with exposed brass hinges, all in excellent original condition. The frieze incorporates a full-length mahogany drawer, again detailed with satinwood stringing, and lined in oak, a hallmark of quality Georgian cabinetmaking. The table stands on four refined, square tapering legs, all inlaid, with the back legs hinged to swing out and support the top when open.

This piece showcases outstanding mahogany timber and crisp satinwood inlay, retaining its original colour and mellow patina. Elegant yet practical, it is a wonderful example of late 18th-century design and would make a distinctive focal point in a drawing room, hall or study.

A George III fold-over tea table is a piece of British period furniture produced during the reign of King George III (17601820). Designed for eighteenth-century social gatherings, it features a hinged top that folds down to present a compact rectangular profile or opens out to double its surface area for serving tea or playing cards.

Georgian tea tables were primarily constructed using dense West Indian or Cuban mahogany. High-status examples feature satinwood or boxwood string inlay, hand-dovetailed drawer joinery, oak secondary timber, and solid brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-planed surfaces, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, uniform timber oxidisation, and original timber shrinkage marks. Hinges and mechanical supports, such as fly-legs or gate-legs, should display period-appropriate hand-cast iron or brass fixtures.
