An antique refined earthenware paperweight made by James Macintyre & Co., Burslem, circa 1889, and printed with a Western Hemisphere map credited to “J.G. Bartholomew F.R.G.S.”. Designed as a cartographic curiosity, the domed top presents the Americas and surrounding oceans with added hand-coloured detail.
 
The paperweight is made in refined earthenware, a fine ceramic body typical of James Macintyre & Co.’s late 19th-century registered decorative wares. Designed as a cartographic curiosity, the piece reflects late Victorian interest in geography and scientific education.
 
The porcelain base features incurved sides with incised geometric ornament and red line decoration. The underside bears a blind-stamped MACINTYRE mark and the British registration number Rd. No. 141265, which dates the design to 1889. Together, these details firmly place the paperweight within Macintyre’s mature production period.
