A sutherland table is a type of narrow drop-leaf table with hinged flaps that drop down nearly vertically, designed during the Victorian era and remaining popular through the Edwardian period (1901-1910) for its space-saving versatility.

These tables are traditionally constructed from timbers such as walnut, mahogany, or oak, featuring hinged drop leaves supported by swinging gate legs, frequently fitted with brass and ceramic castors for mobility.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period joinery techniques, hand-cut dovetails where applicable, natural timber shrinkage, age-appropriate wear to the patina, and original hardware such as slotted brass screws rather than modern fixings.

Positioned against a wall in its folded state, it serves as a narrow console for displaying lamps or books, and can easily be pulled out and opened to provide surface area when entertaining guests in smaller rooms.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent warping, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying a traditional beeswax polish to nourish the wood.
