Good Large Chinese Porcelain Laughing Buddha

1900 - 1920
Description

This is a really impressive and very large Chinese Porcelain Buddha figure in perfect condition dating from the Qing period circa 1910.

The handsome Buddha is beautifully painted in bold colours holding a gold necklace in one hand symbolising prosperity, joy and the attraction of wealth. Figures depicted holding this are representing the laughing Buddha Hotei who is looking very happy here.

This is a great size, very imposing in a room, measuring 30 cms high by 26 cms wide and 24 cms deep. He is in perfect condition with no damage or restoration.

The Laughing Buddha, or Budai, originates from 10th-century Chinese folklore as a Zen Buddhist monk known for his cheerful disposition and generosity. In Chinese ceramic art, depictions of Budai symbolise contentment, abundance, and good fortune, becoming a popular subject for both domestic devotion and export markets.

These sculptures are typically formed using press-moulds or slip-casting techniques with kaolin clay before undergoing an initial high-temperature kiln firing. Overglaze enamels, such as those from the Famille Rose palette, are hand-painted onto the glazed ceramic and fired a second time at lower temperatures to fix the vibrant colours.

Authentic period pieces exhibit unglazed, slightly textured foot rims where the item rested in the kiln, along with natural variations in hand-applied enamels. Wear to gilding or overglaze paint, unglazed interior bases showing manual hand-tooling, and period-appropriate maker marks provide further indicators of age.
