Description

A rare Spode porcelain Candlestick decorated in pattern 1166 c.1815. Spode’s pattern number 1166 was introduced circa 1806 and was one of the most sumptuous designs produced by Spode. Pattern 1166 was first recorded in about 1808. The pattern is ground laid in cobalt blue, hand painted and gilded on Spode's pure white bone china. It is gilded and painted entirely by hand. The combination of cobalt blue and gold is one of the most expensive in ceramic decoration as it is produced with 2 of the most expensive raw materials. This extravagance, coupled with these gorgeous flowers, makes this design one of the most magnificent to come out of the Spode factory. Marked 1166 in red to the base. 

This shape of Candlestick appears in the Spode 1820 Shape Book described as ''181 -  French Flat Candlestick. 4 and 5in.''

Condition: Good. The handle which has been detatched, has been professionally restored back in place.

Fine Antique English Porcelain

Pattern 1166 was first recorded in about 1808. The pattern is ground laid in cobalt blue, hand painted and gilded on Spode's pure white bone china. It is gilded and painted entirely by hand. The combination of cobalt blue and gold is one of the most expensive in ceramic decoration as it is produced with 2 of the most expensive raw materials. This Regency period Spode porcelain chamber candlestick dates to circa 1815 and follows pattern 1166. The object comprises pure white bone china with a ground laid cobalt blue scale pattern, hand-painted floral reserves in multi-colour enamels, and extensive gilding on the rims, candle socket and loop handle.
